General Questions
The main active tanning ingredient used in our formulations is Dihydroxyacetone (also known as DHA), which is derived from plant sources. All our products use a 100% natural DHA delivered from sugar cane, this is combined with a unique blend of skin loving ingredients (including Vitamin A,C and E) that protect and hydrate the skin while providing a natural looking tan.
The DHA reacts chemically with the amino acids found in the upper epidermis (top layer) of the skin producing different tones of coloration from yellow to brown. Each person has a different level of amino acids which is why we all naturally tan slightly differently in the sun. In the same way, every self tan result is individual to you and tailors to your individual skin tone. Our 100% natural DHA self tan products should be left to develop on the skin between 1-8 hours for optimum results.
Natural DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) for tanning is a color additive that is derived primarily from plant sources like sugar beets and sugar cane. It's a simple carbohydrate that reacts with the amino acids in the outer layer of the skin, causing a browning effect. This reaction is similar to the Maillard reaction.
Natural DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) for tanning is a color additive that is derived primarily from plant sources like sugar beets and sugar cane. It's a simple carbohydrate that reacts with the amino acids in the outer layer of the skin, causing a browning effect. This reaction is similar to the Maillard reaction, leading to a change in color. Unlike sunbathing or tanning beds, DHA doesn't involve skin exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, making it a safer alternative for achieving a tanned appearance. The resulting tan from DHA application typically lasts for a few days before gradually fading as the skin naturally exfoliates.
Our products contain clean ingredients which shortens the shelf-life compared to chemical-based brands. You can expect a shelf-life of 6-12 months, however, there are variables that can shorten this.
Some of these variables are:
- How the product is stored (ensure it is stored in a cool, dry place)
- How many times the bottle has been opened and closed
We always recommend storing in a cool, dry place to help preserve the life of your products.
All of our products are PETA-certified vegan friendly and cruelty free.
Each of our products are free of parabens, palm oil, mineral oil & sulfates. Our tanning actives (DHA) are 100% naturally derived from sugar cane. We use some of nature’s most lavish oils, antioxidant-rich botanicals and naturally derived multivitamins to give your skin a deep therapy experience while you tan.
No! All of our products contain a formula that specifically counteracts orange undertones.
Our sunless tanning products provide no protection from the sun and UV light. It is crucial to protect your skin from the sun using an SPF suitable for your individual needs.
Clear foam tanners are transparent and offer a mess-free application, but they don't provide an immediate color guide, which can make it tricky to ensure even coverage. Color-guide foam tanners, on the other hand, contain a temporary bronzer, giving immediate visual feedback where the product is applied, making it easier to achieve an even tan. Both types develop the actual tan over several hours, with the color-guide's initial tint washing off to reveal the final tan.
While you should always check with your doctor before using any new products, using sunless tanner is considered safe during pregnancy. Bring on the baby moon glow!
- Remove the Fabric: Take the stained item off the bed or remove it from your body as soon as possible to prevent the tanner from setting in.
- Rinse with Cold Water: For clothing, turn the fabric inside out and rinse the stained area with cold water to remove as much of the tanner as possible. For bedding, blot the area with a damp cloth.
- Apply Stain Remover: Use a stain remover or a small amount of laundry detergent directly on the stain. Gently rub the fabric together or use a soft brush for bedding, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
- Wash as Usual: Launder the item according to the care instructions, using the hottest water safe for the fabric. For bedding, if the fabric allows, consider adding a small amount of color-safe bleach.
- Check Before Drying: Before putting the item in the dryer, check if the stain is gone. The heat from the dryer can set the stain permanently. If the stain persists, repeat the treatment.
- Dry Appropriately: Once the stain is removed, dry your clothing or bedding as per the care label instructions.
Remember, prevention is key. Use dark-colored or old bedding and wear dark, loose clothing immediately after applying tanner to minimize the risk of stains.
How to Use Prism Tan
You can apply Prism Tan Face Serum just like traditional serums. Use a few pumps of product, enough to cover the entire face. Let the product completely dry before adding anything over it such as makeup or other moisturizers. This serum is buildable and great for daily use depending on how deep of a shade you want.
- Exfoliate Beforehand: Start with exfoliated, smooth skin to ensure even absorption. Focus on dry areas like elbows, knees, and ankles.
- Dry Your Skin: Make sure your skin is completely dry before application.
- Use our Mitt: Apply the tanner with our tanning mitts to avoid staining your hands and to distribute the product more evenly.
- Apply in Sections: Work in sections (like arms, legs, torso), and use circular motions to blend the tanner. Don’t rush; ensure each area is well-covered.
- Use Perfect Blend Brush at Joints: Lightly blend the product over your ankles, knees, and elbows, as these areas can absorb more color.
- Avoid Immediate Contact with Water: Wait a few minutes before dressing to let the tanner dry, and avoid sweating or getting wet for a few hours to allow the tan to develop evenly.
- Moisturize Daily: After your tan develops, keep your skin moisturized to prolong the tan and help it fade evenly.
In the Triple Mitt Kit we have three mitt options to ensure complete coverage. The hand mitt slips onto your hand and is used for general body application. The smaller mitt is for the face and other small areas. The longer mitt is specifically for the back and hard to reach spots. With any of the mitts, apply the product first to the mitt, and then apply it to your body in sweeping motions.
Both the Clear Sunless Tan Foam and the Dark Sunless Tan Foam are safe to use on your face. It is always recommended to do a test patch if you have sensitive skin.
Our 100% natural DHA self tan foams should be left to develop on the skin between 1-8 hours for optimum results. When showering, make sure to do a light rinse, no scrubbing, and avoid bar soaps, products with sulfates, alcohol based products such as toners and astringents, as well as products that cause exfoliation such as AHAs, BHAs, Retin-A, etc.
Each application will last approximately 7+ days as long as you follow all prep, application & rinse tips. We then recommend moisturizing daily afterwards to keep your skin hydrated for a longer lasting, even fading tan.
To ensure the longest lasting tan, we recommend following these before & after tan tips:
- Exfoliate and moisturize 24 hours before you apply your self tan, paying particular attention to elbows, knees, ankles and problem dry areas.
- Wax or shave at least 48 hours prior to treatment. This allows the pores time to close. Dotting in pores may appear if not adhered to.
- For the entire 24 hours before you apply your self tan avoid using bar soaps, high pH shower products, oil based products or in-shower moisturizers. These products may act as a barrier against your skin and can prevent the fast acting tanning agents to develop.
- Before applying your self tan, make sure your skin is clean and dry. Keep in mind that too much moisture causes tanning product to slide right off the skin. Don’t apply moisturizing lotion except in light amounts on your knees and elbows — the areas where tanner generally absorbs too much. This helps stop these areas from getting too dark.
- Don’t apply moisturizer, perfume, deodorant or makeup on the day of application.
- After an hour (or longer – if you choose), shower quickly for 45 secs, with lukewarm water. The brown bronzers will wash away, while the fast tan actives continue to work and deepen. DO NOT USE USE HOT WATER. It stops the development of tan actives during the development time. Use plain water, don’t use shower gels, scrubs, shampoos or loofah during the first 24 hours after your treatment.
- Pat your skin dry. Do not rub or scrub your skin.
- Moisturize everyday after applying your self tan. Use a gradual tan product so the tan is continually being topped up and your tan lasts longer.
- After day 5, exfoliate with a soft body polish on a daily basis, to help your skin absorb even more moisturizer and keep it looking and feeling gorgeous. This also helps the tan fade naturally, rather than in patches.
With our products it is possible to truly customize your tan. Both of our foams and our serum can all be buildable in shade.
- Foams - For a lighter glow, apply one coat and use less foam. For darker, use more foam and apply two coats. Wait until the first coat completely dries before applying the second. It is also possible to apply another coat in the following days.
- Serum - Our serum is a lighter glow, but can build in shade depth if used multiple days in a row.
Our formula is created to prevent those frustrating streaks! That being said, it is still important to properly apply both the foams and serum for a seamless glow. Follow the guide below for the perfect tan everytime.
